What's on offer
The development day is a flagship event offered to students of all ages and from all schools. It has been carefully designed to give students an opportunity to come together for a one-day masterclass in debating delivered by some of ACTDU’s finest adjudicators, debaters and coaches. It also serves as a start-of-competition event for students participating in semester 2 competitions. The day will feature a show debate with experienced ACT and ANU debaters followed by an opportunity for students to reflect on that debate with experienced adjudicators. This is designed to highlight the elements of debating to new debaters, and give everyone a sense of how debates are adjudicated as well as what feedback speakers should look out for.
Following this there will be two 45-minute training sessions: the first focussed on method and manner (including how to structure points and rebuttal), and the second focussed on matter (seminars on important topics such as economics, politics, international relations). These seminars will be delivered by highly qualified, accredited coaches or adjudicators who have a wealth of experience. These sessions will also be split by age group.
At the end of the day, those interested in trialling for the ACT Squad can stay for a short briefing on the process.
With an attendance cost of only $15, and access to the ACT’s top coaches and adjudicators, this is not an opportunity to be missed. An indicative schedule is shown below. Times may change in the coming weeks, but a finalised schedule will be emailed to all participants in the preceding days.
